Commodity ETF Flows: Precious Metals & Energy Funds See Inflows; Cocoa & Cotton ETPs Surge
- Details
Investors add to holdings of GLD, USO and UNG.
Investors added $317 million to exchange-traded commodity products this week. However, flows were mixed, as notable inflows into precious metals and energy ETPs offset minor outflows in the other sectors.
Precious metals funds saw an inflow of $267 million, while energy funds accumulated $98 million. On the other hand, broad market (multicommodity), agriculture and industrial metals ETPs saw outflows of $26 million, $20 million and $1 million, respectively.
Assets under management in commodity-related exchange-traded products now total $165.4 billion.
ETP Inflows/Outflows
Taking a look at individual ETPs, unsurprisingly, precious metals and energy names were far and away the best performers.
SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE Arca: GLD), United States Oil Fund (NYSE Arca: USO), Alerian MLP (NYSE Arca: AMLP), United States Natural Gas Fund (NYSE Arca: UNG) and Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE Arca: GDXJ) had inflows of $162 million, $138 million, $59 million, $58 million and $57 million, respectively.
Interestingly, the worst-performing funds this week were also a mix of precious metals and energy ETPs.
Market Vectors Oil Services (NYSE Arca: OIH), iShares Silver Trust (NYSE Arca: SLV), SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (NYSE Arca: XOP), Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE Arca: GDX) and SPDR S&P Metals and Mining ETF (NYSE Arca: XME) witnessed outflows of $210 million, $102 million, $28 million, $24 million and $21 million, respectively.
ETP Performance
Soft commodity ETPs focused on cocoa and cotton were the best price performers this week.
The iPath Dow Jones-UBS Cocoa Total Return ETN (NYSE Arca: NIB), iPath Pure Beta Cocoa ETN (NYSE Arca: CHOC) and iPath Pure Beta Cotton ETN (NYSE Arca: CTNN) rose 10.02 percent, 9.6 percent and 5.22 percent, respectively.
United States Metals Index (NYSE Arca: USMI) and Elements MLCX Biofuels Total Return ETN (NYSE Arca: FUE) rounded out the top five, with advances of 4.45 percent and 3.77 percent, respectively.
On the flip side, solar energy funds were the worst performers this week.
Market Vectors Solar Energy (NYSE Arca: KWT), Guggenheim Solar (NYSE Arca: TAN) and iPath Global Carbon ETN (NYSE Arca: GRN) fell by 9.47 percent, 9.24 percent and 8.52 percent, respectively.
EGShares Emerging Markets Metals & Mining ETF (NYSE Arca: EMT) and First Trust ISE Global Platinum (NYSE Arca: PLTM) took the Nos. 4 and 5 spots, with losses of 7.33 percent and 6.94 percent, respectively.
