Golden Handcuffs Broken?
Has gold finally pulled out of its stall? Well, things certainly improved for gold bulls Thursday. A look at the August COMEX gold chart shows a gap-up trading session that promised a breakout from June's doldrums. The contract finished at $915.10 an ounce yesterday, up nearly $33. SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE Arca: GLD), an exchange-traded grantor trust holding gold bullion, finished the day up $3.19 per share, or 3.6%.

Gold/Silver Ratio Still Widening
Both gold and silver were lower this morning after Thursday's rally spilled into the overnight markets. Nearby futures traded above their 10-day moving averages, indicating the establishment of a short-term low. Closes above the 20-day moving averages - $896 for COMEX June gold and $17.21 for COMEX July silver - would confirm the basing. Resistance sits at $891.for gold futures and at $17.14 for the silver contract.

More Ruminations On Gold And Silver

At last look, silver was up 3.5% on the day, extending overnight gains and building on last week's rally. Gold was up a more modest 2.2%. We've been down this road before, only going in the other direction.
