Why Bother With GLD Options?
In late May, we ran a column announcing the debut of option trading on the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE Arca: GLD) grantor trust (see "Options for Options"). Since then, we've received a fair amount of comment on gold ETF option trading, ranging from "So what?" to "That's crazy!"

Golden Handcuffs Broken?
Has gold finally pulled out of its stall? Well, things certainly improved for gold bulls Thursday. A look at the August COMEX gold chart shows a gap-up trading session that promised a breakout from June's doldrums. The contract finished at $915.10 an ounce yesterday, up nearly $33. SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE Arca: GLD), an exchange-traded grantor trust holding gold bullion, finished the day up $3.19 per share, or 3.6%.

The Swissie And Gold

The Swiss have been known for their ability to stay out of others' fights. Neutrality is, um, fiercely defended in the Alps. And so is the Swissie's strong gold backing.

Breakout For Gold, Some Say

According to Jamie Chisholm of the Financial Times, gold's now staging a breakout move. Traders, however, may find it difficult to take much comfort in that headline because Mr. Chisholm is hedging his bets.

Gold’s Quotient Rising?
With all the hoopla centered on the oil markets of late, gold bulls are feeling a little pushed out of shape. Or at least pushed out of the limelight. Gold's near-term weakness, of course, hasn't helped. The metal fared well in the overnight market Thursday, but that was consolidation after the floor session sell-off, which was, itself, a continuation of the two-month slide in bullion prices. June COMEX futures are now $149, or 15%, below the St. Patrick's Day peak of $1,021 per ounce.

Inflation Contest: Crude 1-Gold 0
Yesterday's musings on oil prices and inflation (see "Don't Think And Drive") got me thinking (I know ... a seemingly rare circumstance). We've now slogged through the first five months of the year, a year that seemed to hold the promise of riches galore for oil and gold bulls alike.

52-to-1 Just Right For Gold/Silver Ratio?
With all the market tumult recently, it's nice to be able to count on something constant. The gold/silver ratio isn't immutable, but it's been mighty steady while metals prices have been roiling.

The Week In Gold (And Silver)
Well, my luggage belatedly arrived after this week's trek to the Hard Assets Conference. And the technical whizzers that keep this site running are indicating that my conference presentation on hedging gold stock/fund volatility will be put up as a feature next week.

Gold/Silver Ratio Still Widening
Both gold and silver were lower this morning after Thursday's rally spilled into the overnight markets. Nearby futures traded above their 10-day moving averages, indicating the establishment of a short-term low. Closes above the 20-day moving averages - $896 for COMEX June gold and $17.21 for COMEX July silver - would confirm the basing. Resistance sits at $891.for gold futures and at $17.14 for the silver contract.
